Imagine having everything we need already provided but refusing to take possession of it. There are many things in our lives that God has already given or promised to us. These promises are sure. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. (II Corinthians 1:20) It is our responsibility to take possession of these things. Here are but a few examples.
- We have been promised that all of our needs would be met, but we must possess that (Philippians 4:19)
- We have been promised deliverance from the world’s corruption, but we must possess that (II Peter 1:4)
- We have been promised strength, but we must possess that (Philippians 4:13)
- We have been promised to be comforted, but we must possess that ( John 14:18)
- We have been promised good things, but we must possess that (Psalms 84:11)
- We have been promised cleansing from sin, but we must possess that (I John 1:9)
- We have been promised the fruit of the Spirit, but we must possess that (Galatians 5:22-23)
- We have been promised deliverance from our fears, but we must possess that (Psalm 34:4)
- We have been promised that God would contend for us with our enemies, but we must possess that (Isaiah 49:25)
- We have been promised good gifts, but we must possess that (Luke 11:13)
- We have been promised that God would freely give us all things, but we must possess that (Romans 8:32)
- We have been promised wisdom, but we must possess that ( James 1:5)
- We have been promised peace, but we must possess that (Isaiah 26:3)
When God commanded the people to possess the land, He was telling them to take it as their own possession. He had promised it to them just as He has promised many things to us. It is our responsibility to possess these things and to make them our own by obedience to His Word.
There are many things God has promised to us as Christians and to us as a church. It is our responsibility to recognize these things. We then must obey these two commands to go in and possess the land. Only when we are willing to take those two steps will we enjoy all that God has provided for us.
